Jacqueline Bassey Pre-College 04 Ms. Flynn April 1, 2015 Bipolar disorder is like roller coaster; a patient’s mood can change from an extreme high to an extreme low in a matter of seconds. Bipolar disorder is an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. It is a disorder that many Americans suffer from, and the severity depends on the type. There are two main types: Bipolar I and Bipolar II. Moods can range from extreme happiness or rage, also known as the manic stage, to extremely depressed, also known as the depressive stage. Hypomania is one of the extremes part of the manic stage, and the main concern is that it causes one to make risky decisions. Treatment is an option, whether it is from medication or therapy. However, bipolar disorder is not always diagnosed, or it is ignored. Because of this, living with bipolar disorder can be difficult for friends, family or oneself, but if willing, it is certainly manageable with treatment. There are two main types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I and Bipolar II. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Bipolar I Disorder is â€Å"defined by manic or mixed episodes that last at least seven days, or by manic symptoms that are so severe that the person needs immediate hospital care.
